English Harbour, Nelson's Dockyards, Shirley Heights, Indian Town, Fig Tree Drive, Greencastle Hill, and many sugar plantations, are popular points of interest worth checking out. True to its claim of offering a bit of everything, one can golf, scuba dive, enjoy watersports, or take a glass bottom boat ride. If you want a bit of lively fun, circle the island on the famous three hour "Jolly Roger" cruise, and watch your travelling companions slowly fall victim to sweet but potent rum-punch. A few casinos on the island, including the larger King's Casino in St. John's, are quite prepared to take your money if you so choose! Shopping for duty free goods, local crafts, and souvenirs is convenient in the downtown area of Heritage Quay, and a variety of restaurants and bars will offer ample choice for a one or two week vacation. Some discos in St. John's and selected hotels serve up dance music or live entertainment for those looking for a little nightlife, Ribbett's being the most popular. There are few new hotels on the island; many were built well over twenty years ago and have undergone renovations. |
